It really helps a lot if you say what the box is as my crystal ball is at the menders. However here is some generic stuff.
When you swap the cables if the fault stays with 'input 1' then the fault is with the STB. If the fault moves then it is with the cable of the LNB.
The cable from the STB to the LNB carries power (for the LNB). If the STB was powered up when you fiddled with the cables then there is a very good chance that you have zapped it, or the LNB, or both. (Alternatively when you shortened the cable you produced a dead short so check your wiring before you go further.) If you are lucky then that circuit will be protected by an internal fuse. If you are adept at such things you can open the box (Power off and unplugged) and check. If you can't find a fuse then the box has had.
There is no way to fix LNBs but that is the less likely scenario. Most multiple installations have quad LNBs these days so if you suspect the LNB you can swap to a spare.
