any1 know what this means?

hi, i downloaded the windows xp home edition bootup disk from microsoft and it says i need 6 floppy disks to put the bootup files on. when i start to put the files onto the floppy disk it tells me (this device is not ready) meaning the floppy disk drive. any1 got any ideas why it keeps telling me this. my pc system is windows xp home edition and the floppy drive is a sony. thanks

are the floppy disks formatted when you put them in?
is the floppy drive enabled in the boot sequence when you turn on the machine?
