Thank you, it was in fact the heater, I bottled out of the job and had the local domestic service engineer visit who had the job done and finished in 30 mins.

it could be your heater but you need to check its resistance to prove it is fault.around 20-30ohms normally.there is also another issue and that is a burnt track on the control pcb board (board behind buttons you press to set programs).again you need to remove front control panel and take pcb out of its plastic holder and look at this.check connectors for burns going to pcb and check heater connector for burns as they can cause fault
