Vauxhall Astra Merit diesel 1.7?

My car is showing a regular tendency to overheat and seemingly needs water added (about 2 litres) about every 100 miles. I suspect that there is air in the water system but would welcome suggestions on how to correct this and other probable causes.

On starting the car runs with adequate heater for about 20-5 minutes but then temp gauge rises, and heater stops blowing hot air

I have exactly the same problem with my Astra TD, mine is also using vast amounts of engine oil, no visible leaks. Local garage carried out a Block Test? charged me £50 and said, well it could be head gasket or turbo. Both jobs totally out priced the car.
