My pen drive does not seem to be getting recognised by my computer?

When I put one of my pen drives into my computer or laptop it is not being recognised by the hardware detector. However when I wiggle it about it seems to pick it up for a split second. Any suggestions as to how I can repair this are very welcome.

the usb drive in question is a samsung 8gb.
