can i run a cable from an internal socket outside to a light? If this is not possible what the best solution, if there a way round this?

Just bear in mind though that it would not be legal to do that in the in the UK.

Drill a hole through the wall going slightly downwards (stop water running in) dia of hole same as cable, the cable once outside needs to go down an inch before going up (ie a little loop again to stop water running in) make sure cable is fixed to the wall. On the inside fit a plug on the cable and this can be done without knowing a lot about electrics
