Did you ever find out what caused this because mine intermittently does the same. I paid Ariston a lot of money to fix it but they sent a subcontractor who clearly thought he'd fixed it, I think he did his best, but I was left with an intermittent fault that sometimes leaked Carbon Monoxide gas and made me very ill.
Ariston are trying to wriggle out of it. I don't know what to do. I have had no heating or hot water for three weeks and extensive oxygen treatment for the effects of CO poisoning.
The boiler is just over 3 years old and Ariston told me it was perfectly safe and had loads of cut outs. Their sub contractor fired it up without the cover or the condensing chamber cover on and a four foot fireball shot out and set fire to the wiring.
I'm horrified at the lack of care and safety procedures. For god's sake get a good quality carbon monoxide alarm if you have one of these boilers.
