What could be wrong with my home dvd system?

I have got a Technics SCDV290 home system, I have cleaned the DVD / CD players (5 disc), it will load all CD's but will not load many DVD's, it has become very temperamental. Also the DVD player does not play multi region, is there an overide code?

I wouldn't bother worrying about converting your player to multi region until you have a new laser fitted, that's your main problem.
