you cannot stop the filter FILLING the filter is there to protect the pump the pump needs to be mounted low down to pump efficiently clean filter REGULARLY SHOULD ONLY BE CLEAN WATER DOWN THERE the stink could be mould/hairs /power residue caused by LOW temperature washes do a 95 deg wash with no clothes in use a powder than contains bleach
