How to fix my cd rom drive?

I am running win xp Home Edition In the (my computer) page my cd drive (E) the icon is missing and when I put a cd in the drive it will not recognize it My cd drive is ST340810A How can I repair it. HP Pavilion 520W Lois329@Hotmail.com

Boot up your computer and then the very first screen that comes up will have ways to get to either the boot menu or the BIOS. Go into the BIOS and check to see if your computer even realizes it's there.If theres a ! right next to it take that off and it should work fine.

Try taking it back to the person you bought it from or the company, there might be some reason for it not working like, dust on the lense, up-grades, loose wires or many other things. You should not try to fix any of these things or tamper with your cd-rom settings on the computer because you may delete a code that is needed.
