my smeg dishwasher shows error e8?

what does e8 on my smeg dishwasher mean
donna, February 2008
Just an update that my Alternate Valve finally gave up so ordered a replacement one and fitted it. This still gave an error E8 so finally worked out that if you run on a single tray program (for me P2 - top tray only) then the washer continues to work just fine :)

Thanks for putting the pictures up!

I had the same E8 error code after I sluiced out the dishwasher as it was giving an E9 error code (out of the frying pan...)

I guess the dislodged muck and lime scale caused the alternate valve to get stuck so I removed it as described (it's easier to put it on the left side as you look at the front while you do this.

Prize off the bottom cover starting with the two hooked clips at the front, then gently un-clip the sides and the back then hinges out.

I cut the cable tie holding the wires together, and unplugged the alternate valve to make life easier - and took photos with my phone the whole way through in case I had problems putting it all back together.

Followed the great instructions on how to disconnect the rest, and then soaked the unit in limescale remover for an hour, washed it out and then manually twisted it a little to ensure it was relatively free turning (it is still tight to turn)

Reassembled and added a new cable tie to keep the wires out of the way - checked everything was reconnected correctly and then put it all back together.

First time it tried to run I still got the E8 error, so put some relatively hot water from the kettle into the main tray to free things up, re-ran the program and now all looks good.

Thanks again for the great advice, and if you have a vague DIY bone in your body (and a good pair of pliers to squeeze the hose clips to loosen and re position them) then you should be able to fix yours too :-)

La domanda: my smeg dishwasher shows error e8? la mia lavastoviglie Smeg dimostra e8 errore?

Just wanted to say thanks to Jezzer for his really helpful post- we have just followed his instructions exactly and the machine now works a treat. Much better than the £180 Smeg wanted for an engineer. You are a dishwasher hero :)

I just want to thank Jezzer for the help with the error code E8. My dishwasher is back in business!

Maryasara, March 2011
I did as instructed above. Laid it down, removed the alternate valve, took off the rubber cover, removed all the gears, gave it all a good clean and lubed it up again with vasalene and it now works great. Thanks for the tip.

I want to thank Jezzer for his help, we followed his advice regarding the alternate valve (e8 fault) and it worked like magic, my machine is working again.

Thanks for sharing this information.

Best wishes,

I've just fixed my smeg dishwasher that was showing error code e8. The alternate valve is in the bottom of the machine roughly in the middle (turn it on it's side and pop off the plastic bottom plate). I removed the valve - that required taking off two hoses and unplugging the connector. The valve seems to have leaked a bit and had gunk all over it. I took it apart and cleaned it (there are some plastic gear wheels and a motor that pops off). There is a micro switch which detects the rotation of the valve. The switch is a 'normally closed' type and wasn't working. I removed it and carefully eased it apart and cleaned the contacts. Put it all back together and now the dishwasher is working again!

M. Wilson you are a superstar! The last time my DW1 710 E1 needed reset, it took me days of fiddling and net browsing. I've just reset today in minutes thanks to your above reply. My brother has just paid a £90 call-out fee + £60 labour for his machine!

You could try resetting your machine. I have a DW1710E Smeg Dishwasher and I found the reset button on mine. Whether this is the same as yours you will find out. Behind the plinth, your dishwasher has a steel panel. I removed this and exposed the wiring, the reset button is red and at the leftmost part of the machine, on the "ceiling" of the bottom on the machine (if that makes sense!). Remember to switch off first. Good Luck.

Go to http://www.smegtech.com to download the manual - it should give all the error codes. Mine is a bit older than yours and only goes up to problem 5. Good luck.
