extension socket stopped working?

Incoming line goes to the main outlet socket (works fine), from there it is wired to two further simple sockets (work fine), from one of these a further socket is wired. On this one there is no ring tone although it rings when there's an incoming call. But can't answer a call or make a call from this socket. It was working fine until I moved some cables under the floor boards although I was VERY carefull to rewire exactly the same? Any easy checks I can make?

You don't say what country your are in.

It sounds like you have connected the bell circuit but not the speech circuit. The extensions should daisy chain from the Master socket.

If you are in the UK you should have Blue & White to 2 and White & Blues to 5 with no other wires out of the six connected. Try that then see if you get the phone on the failing extension to ring. If it doesn't connect Orange & White to 3 -or buy a more modern phone.
