How to unlock laptop?

Laptop was turned off and when I made attempt to open, it showed computer had been locked . How can computer bee locked without locking and how do you unlock. Appears to be frozen. XP Home Compaq

It sound like it went into hibernation. You need to enter your logon password which you use all, the time to start XP.
