water running continually?

I tried raising and lowering the float via the adjustable turn thing ... water still rises above the float and goes into the overflow hole and continues to try to fill the tank. Mine has the half moon type flush buttons.

Time for a new washer in the float valve, methinks (depending on which make it is - there are several) - or replacing the complete thing with something like a Torbeck valve is a better option.
