We are seeing black marks appear on the seal for the drum do you know what they are and how do we get rid of them without damaging the seal?

just to add to the sound advice given below, check if the marks are greasy. may be an early indication of seal and bearing failure - use meths to clean.
if the problem is mould, do a high temp wash without any clothes but add a cupful of white vinegar to the wash. the increased acidity and high temp will bump off any mould.

possibly the start of mold caused by LOTS OF LOW TEMPERATURE WASHES ,to late if mold has eaten into the rubber, do what the makers call a service wash 90+ no clothes and bleach in the drawer to kill the gunge (monthly)
wipe the door gasket after washing completed leave the door OPEN a little (inch will do) along with the soap drawer to allow air to flow through the machine.
