How can I fix my Kenmore 385.16120200 reverse stitch?

When I use the reverse stitch the thread gets all jumbled and knotted up on the top side of the fabric and on the underside of the fabric, the thread looks too loose all the time. How can I fix this? I have the tension set at 1 or 2, but changing this doesn't seem to help, it only makes it worse.

Hello Teresa,
It definitely is a tension problem, make sure you have the thread completely between the tension discs, top tension should be between 4 and 6, bottom tension should be enough to pull the thread through with some resistence, if the bottom tension is too tight slacken off the screw on the bobbin case a quarter of a turn at a time until you get it right.
