will not play copies?

technics sl-dv170 will not read copied cds
stan mcvaigh, March 2008
The sl-dv170 is pretty non-compatible with recordable DVDs. Check DVD-R and DVD+R. I'm pretty sure ONE of them plays OK.

Dispite the online myths, commercially pressed discs and "domestic" recorded discs are not identical inasmuch that a hidden data track will flag a commercially pressed disc as 01, whereas "domestic" recorded discs on home burners will flag it as 00.
There is no digital/sonic differences, but this data track flagging causes the problem you're having where a standalone "hiFi" player will not recognise a disc flagged as 00.
There are a couple of fixes, not so straightforward though.
1) There are many firmware updates that can be applied to PC/Mac burners that will "upgrade" a burner to flag produced discs as 01. The produced discs will play on all "HiFi" players.
But you have to discern what make/model your burner is, then seek out the specific firmware for that model.
2) There is a service flash firmware upgrade that can be applied to "some" standalone "HiFi" players which results in such players being able to read domestic discs flagged as 00, but this is rare with CD players, more common with DVD players. It requires that your Technics cd player has an RS232 service port and if so contact your local Technics service dept for this "upgrade".
