The timing on my Singer Inspiration has gone wrong?

I was sewing some jeans. When I got to the seams, the needle got 'jammed' and the machine must have 'jumped' a bevel gear or two! Now, the machine can't be used without the needle hitting the bobbing holder thingy and breaking. I am mechanically minded and can't afford dealer repair bills...any ideas?
