The DVD tray on my DVD/VCP player is stuck halfway out, what do I do?

I have a Magnavox DVD/VCP combination player that is only 8 months old. It has worked fine until today. Some colleagues borrowed the machine today to play a DVD, and when they returned it, the DVD tray was stuck halfway out. I can tell that it's automatically trying to either draw itself in or eject the full way out. If I turn the power off, it turns itself back on, I assume because the tray is trying to open or close itself. I don't want to force the tray, obviously, but I need to have it fixed. I use it almost every day for instruction with my students. Does anyone know if this can be fixed, or do my colleagues owe me $50 to buy a replacement?

The player, as I said, is a Magnavox DVD/CD Player with Video Cassette Player, model # DV800MW8.

I would let them force it open or closed with the stipulation that if it breaks they buy a new one.
