HELP....! my tomtom 500 is stuck on the opening screen?

my tomtom go 500 is stuck on the opening screen where theres a finger pointing to a tomtom its like crashed and wont turn on or off and the battery will only hold about a couple of hours charge any help or advice would be most apprechiated
