I have a loud horn noise from my toilet when I flush it?

I opened the cistern and part covered the hole where the water comes out to fill the cistern and this solved it, but I cant put tape on the hole (can I?) does this need a new washer inside the pipe or something else?

Thanks that was helpful, I took it apart and tried to get a new washer from the local hardware store, none available. Knowing the size of the washer I put the thing back together so that the toilet would be back in use and the noise has completely stopped. Maybe it was just vibrations and having been jiggled about it has been sorted. Thanks for the help though. Much appreciated.

OK, the 'U' pipe prevents water splash onto the cistern lid. I think the noise is probably due to the washer bouncing quickly....turn water off, undo large plastic nut to reveal the washer behind. Mind you, I don't do this - I just put a complete new valve in as old ones are often full of limescale. Torbeck type preferred - nice and quiet!

It flows up through a fill valve then has a thin U pipe on the top, so that the water falls down and not up, I tried taking this off but the noise is still there.

Curious....does your fill valve have a thin polythene tube attached to it, that the water flows through?
