Mt dvd plaer has a herringbone slanted pattern when it plays. Audio works well. Could it be the video chip or the laser? Thanks.

First check quality of connecting cable. Use individually screened cables. Cheap cables can cause poor results.

Also, check that both the DVD's video output setting and TV's video input settings are of the same type.
A mismatch of Composite Video to S-VHS may cause symptoms similar to those you described and/or no colour.

It won't be a faulty laser.
