Why does burning a CD cause my PC to blue screen?

When I burn a CD my PC often Blue Screens. I get different messages. It is not always the same problem.

I use Windows XP and have tried using both Nero and Roxio products to do the actual burning.

What could be causing this? Could someone please give me a couple of things to try?

the only thing I can think of is to try reinstalling the drivers for the CD-Rom drive, or try deleting all .TMP files in the temp directory
