If your cistern is the type with buttons in the centre to depress for flushing then it may remove like mine, which is a Sottini. Pull out the two flushing buttons from their recess. This will expose a screw head which should be unscrewed. The chamber holding the flushing buttons may then be removed and it will allow removal of the entire cistern lid.

If you have a button flush in a chrome plate then you access the valves etc through the plate. To remove the plate, push it to one side (n mine, to the right) and then you can pull the plate forward and off.
On my system, you then remove a plastic bezel with four long brass screws and then an inner bezel that is held in place by two plastic springy catches. The hole is then large enought to access the valves inside.

I think you unscrew the flush button, ,press down on the rim around the button then turn .it should start to come undone
