My Daewoo dvd player appears to be running normally except that it apparently is not reading the discs. I have tried several different discs, and the machine still says there is no disc. What is the problem, and how do I fix it? If the problem is the lens, how do I clean/fix it? The owner's manual says there would be some dangerous exposure if I open the dvd player. Would that be true even if it were unplugged? I hate to buy a new machine since it is a combination dvd-vcr, and the vcr is working fine.

it could be a number of problems, i have had the same problem,
-Dvd Dirty
-Dvd reader dirty
-Plugged in wrong
-Battery for portable low

For Me it was a problem with a connection from the dvd reader to the video controller, a thin,flat piece that looks like a slip of paper with metal in it. Refer to another Dvd player to compare connection.
If all else fails take it back or get a tech to look at it.

Hey, try checking to see if the dvd player will read cd's.

I have the same type of dvd/vcr unit someone wanted me to take a look at. This one will read cd's, but has trouble reading dvd's. From what I can read around, its usually caused by a dirty lens(if you can read cd's that is). I'm planning on taking it apart and cleaning it this week. If it doesn't work, these units are fairly cheap, and ill recommend a replacement.
