washing machine wont spin??

My washing machine washes but when it comes to the spin cycle it makes a horrid noise and wont spin any ideas would be appreciated?

I have the same problem & haven't fully diagnosed it but I do know that some machines have two speeds, slow for washing & fast for spin. The windings for the faster speed may be damaged.
