my washing machine trips as soon as itrun it on we replaced two paddles in it and my husband thinks the element is broken from when the paddles broke

I had the same problem (in fact the rcd was tripping as soon as the door closed). I opened up the dryer section and found that there was quite a bit of water in there. I also noticed that part of the rubber seal between the two halves of the dryer section had come adrift (so I put it back in place).

I put everything back together again but it was still tripping, so to get things going I disconnected the pink wire. I'll see if things dry out over the coming days and I'll also see if I can get a new seal too.

Luckily we're in the middle of a warm dry spell so I can dry the laundry on line/clothes dryer :)

That pink thermal cut out cable was the problem here. It had burnt out (broken) and had arc'd itself onto the main body of the dryer heater element, hence, tripping the main circuit breaker. Removed it as I dont use the drying programmes but I will still look for a replacement !!

All working fine now :)

had exactly the same issue, took it apart, and the heater element (dryer section on top) had cracked right though thus creating a short.

Pretty easy to rectify.

UPDATE: i think i may have found the problem, i disconnected the thermal cut out cable (pink), the machine runs without tripping so hopefully will just need to replace this part i am just worried what may have caused this in the first place and if the problem is deeper than i imagine ?

suspect your heater element is faulty power going to earth through the water takes out the rcd in the fuse box
