computer freezes?

My computer has suddenly started freezing every so often. It has always done it from time to time but now it is quite frequent. 1) Is there any way of unfreezing it without restarting the computer? 2) Is there any particular reason it's doing this in the first place?

I have Windows XP home and the processor in the machine is AMD Duron, with 697 MHz and 256 Mb of RAM.

1. Hard drive space could be getting low. Right click on your hard drive Icon and select properties. If it is low delete unwanted files in recycle bin and other places on your computer.
2. You may need to delete temparary files on your computer.
Go to My Computer then on the left under system task click change a setting, then click network and internet connections, then click internet options, the box will come up. Under general tap (which may already be selected) come down to the middle temporary files section and click delete files.
