for anyone else that's suffered this problem, i found the solution. i made the mistake of formatting my mp3 player then loaded new music on. formatting it removed the firmware, making it run incorrectly. all that was required was inserting the accompanying cd and reloading the firmware onto the player. this worked a treat and left me smiling to myself with added glee. aah, it was like having a new player. i promptly consumed some alcoholic beverages and a "happy cigarette" in celebration. my life has added meaning now that i once again have portable audio entertainment at my fingertips.
