The washing machine (Smartdrive 601) has been working well. Suddenly while filling with water (i.e. not under load), everything stopped. Lights work but nothing else. Power-point checked out OK. Tried a day later! Took off top and checked no loose wires (the extent of my electrical skills). Any ideas? Hidden fuses?

Did the machine finish filling with water ? A couple of years ago I had a problem with a faulty cold water inlet valve solenoid. No visual indication. I am not sure whether you could test this out by manually filling the machine with a bucket to the correct level to see whether the cycles would then continue.
