My LG RH7500 won't read or write DVDs?

My LG RH7500 won't read or write to DVDs. the hard disk record and playback work fine. If I insert a writable DVD (all formats +- RW;+-DVDR) it rcognises that there is a DVD inserted then can't do anything to it. I had a quote for a replacement at slightly more than the whole thing cost me new. Can I replace the DVD drive with another of suitable geometry (door in correct place)? Or has anyone any idea what I need to do to the existing drive?

Stripped the unit down, cleaned the lens but still no good ???

My machine would not play any of my recorded discs and would tell me that the disc was unrecognised even though it had only just recorded it for me.
I cleaned the lens as suggested by others on this forum and it worked perfectly immediately.

This worked for me!

Hi, this really works great but the instructions could be better.
Here is my version of how to clean the lens.

1. Remove the seven screws holding on the lid of the DVD recorder.
2. There is a black plastic cover that sits on top of the DVD drive
(where you put the discs in) This cover has 2 small screws 1 each side remove the screws to reveal the DVD lens.
3. Gently wipe with clean lint free cloth (I used a camera lens cloth)
4. Replace the cover over the DVD drive and replace the 2 screws.
5. Replace the lid of the recorder and fix with the 7 screws.
6. Turn on and I bet it works.

my player has similar problem error messags comes up with (unknown disc please check disc again) and rejects (opens the dic tray)
the player started playing up just after 15 months trouble is if i put in a dvd cleaner disc it does the same thing
and thease are the discs L.G. recomend
ive contacted them and found there aftersales not very helpfull
so the only solution was i now use tdk blue colour discs and found thease discs are accepted better
but it appears i still have to remove the players cover and clean the lazers head (with dvd unplugged from mains) with a q tip and acohol based liquid every six months
i think dust is the problem it only needs a spec invisible
to the eye

I haven't had a problem with writing DVD's, but the following may help to get your playback working again. I was just about ready to buy a new recorder - but this seems to have worked for me.

Needless to say (I hope!) - perform this with the player disconnected from the mains.

Remove the cover (seven screws) to expose the DVD drive. There is a small plastic cover over the DVD bay protecting the laser. Now, use a clean, lint free cloth (I used a camera lens cleaning cloth) to gently wipe the lens.

Replace all your bits & job done.
