how to fit a new exhaust?

I currently have a dodgy exhaust on a car I have just bought privately, (citroen saxo, 1999, 1.0i). It has been welded on but is blowing alot. Would I be ok to get a new, bigger exhaust and re-weld it, or should I get it clamped and done that way?
