If you are using a plug in graphics card such as in the AGP or PCI slot, then the chances are it has built in memory. On this basis the memory in the card is used first followed by then using system memory to top up the requirement needed to play the game. Now if you are using the onboard graphics, then you need to make sure that you have assigned enough memory from the system in the CMOS file for the display adaptor to have sufficient resorces to run the game you are playing. For example if using the onboard graphics and you have 512mb of memory then assign at least 128mb of this to the display adaptor, leaving you with 384mb of system memory.
