I have a Canon Pro1. It has taken about 18,000 pictures, and suddenly turned off. I took the camera to authorized Canon service here in Ankara-Turkey. I have been told that it was due to a shutter problem. Their suggested solution was to change the lens, which cost about 250 euro something. I refused their suggestion, and told them that I will take my camera back.

One day later they have informed me that they did a modification in the camera and now it works in between 28-50 mm zoom range, so I cant zoom the lens beyond 50 mm. After receiving my camera in this condition I have shifted to a third party repair shop, where I have learned that the main problem was with flexible cables of shutter system, and after the modification of Canon service now the only repair option is really lens replacement.

When I asked Canon; why they did a modification on my camera without my consent, they have replied like "We did a favor for you, we even did not charge money for this modification, you are free to pass your complaints to anywhere you want"

1- After so called "modification" camera starts to function at lower zoom range.

Hence: shutter mechanism is not totally defective. Problem prevents higher zooms.

2- Third party repair shop claims that, original problem was with flexible cable which connect shutter unit to camera body. Hence It could be repaired without changing the whole lens. And actually, Canon supplies these parts separately for repairs as well.

3- After I reject service offers, they did a modification in the lens and now shutter works in low zoom range but not higher zoom ranges.

Now my questions are;

1- Does whole lens needed to be replaced?

2- Pro 1 has high quality lenses, would you tie their life to a flexible cable so once your cheap cable dies you also trove expensive lens with them?

3- If this is Canon policy of production we should now it before we buy from them.

4- Do they have right to make such modification, and give me a partially working camera which locks itself with a LENS error when you shift zoom higher than 50 mm.

5- Does the authorized Canon services has right to make modifications on cameras without owners consent?

my camera had the same problem i reset factory defalt by holding down the menu button for 10 seconds then reset its back to normal now ,im not saying it will work for you but what ya got to loose

cannon Pro1 Default Settings

On the Canon PowerShot G5 and Pro1 cameras, you can easily restore the factory default settings by pressing the Menu button on the back of the camera for 5 seconds or longer.

When you get the "Reset settings to default?" prompt, use the right arrow on the Omni Selector button to select OK. Then press the Set button to restore the default settings. Now all you need to do is change the resolution and compression settings. On the PowerShot G5 and Pro1, go into camera mode for taking pictures, and then set the resolution by pressing the FUNC button.

Use the Omni Selector to scroll down to the bottom entry in the list for resolution. Then press the right or left arrows on the Omni Selector dial to move between and select one of the four or five settings:

M2 or M3 for 1024 x 768 (recommended)
And press the FUNC button again to save the setting.

Next set the compression by again pressing the FUNC button.

Use the Omni Selector to scroll down to the second entry from the bottom in the list for compression.

Then press the right or left arrows on the Omni Selector dial to move between and select one of the three settings:

The middle setting (Fine), which is recommended
And press the FUNC button again to save the setting.

Finally, turn the Mode dial on the top of the camera until the word AUTO (in green) lines up with the black line to the left of the dial.

Now if you want, you can personalize the menu settings or switch to a manual mode of shooting.

I would write to Canon in the first instance to ask their advice, since you took it initially to a Canon authorised dealer. That is not Canon itself but a third party authorised by Canon to repair equipment on their behalf.

The authorised dealer may have had good intentions but, if only the shutter had failed and the zoom worked throughout its entire range before you took it to them, then the authorised repairer has in fact introduced a problem that didn't previously exist. That they didn't charge you for it is irrelevant.

Relay this information to Canon in a reasonable way and ask for their expert advice as to how to fix both problems at a reasonable cost.
