How can I fix a push button on a new toilet?

I have a toilet which is flushed by pressing a small round button mounted in the wall. The toilet won't flush. How do I know if it is the push button mechanism or something within the cystern that has broken? (The push button is connected to the cystern by a tube.)

Take the tube off the button and give a quick hard blow down it . If the toilet flushes then the button is broken if it doesnt then there is a fault in the cistern
