fiat ducato engine gearbox 5th gear issue?

My camper van with Fiat Ducato engine has an issue whereby the fifth gear will not stay engaged, hjad a new fifth gear installed in Greece still no good and have just had a spring replaced in the gearbox back in the UK and still no fix for the problem, it will stay in gear as long as you keep your hand pushing the the gearstick but falls out once removed

I know this is an old thread but would like to know if anyone sorted the problem out.
I am in Sweden and have just replaced the 5th gears and the synchro. Put it back together and it is still jumping out of 5th gear.
I am desperate for a fix.
Peugeot haven't got a clue.

We have just had the same thing happen on our Frankia 2002 Fiat Ducato 2.8 jtdi. motorhome with 60,000 km on the clock. We were driving along the motorway in Germany and suddenly fifth gear just disappeared the gear lever didn't jump out , no grinding sounds it was just gone, it was as if I was revving the engine in neutral. Gears 1-4 were still functioning. We took it to a Fiat/Iveco commercial vehicle workshop in Kalkar by the dutch border. They removed the 5th gear housing and saw that all the teeth had been broken off the gears, so they ordered a complete new 5th gear set including the large nut on the end, the changing fork, seals etc...the lot.. it came to 700 Euros including a 10% discount, on top of this was the labour, with Vat the whole lot came to 1026 Euros....Gasp. They let us stay outside on the forecourt whilst we waited for parts overnight. Next day everything was fitted and we took it for a test drive.... changed into 5th and out jumped the gear, tried again the same. Well to cut a long story short, the gears have been taken out and put in about 5 or six times now. The cables from the gear lever have also been checked and are ok. We were stuck at the garage for 5 days and the problem has still not been resolved, we thought it had been sorted out after another replacement set was used, but after driving another 150 km the gear lever is still jumping out occasionally..... Now my questions, has anyone else had this problem after changing the entire 5th gear?, could there something wrong inside the gearbox? maybe a problem on one of the shafts that come out to the 5th gear. Just to add...prior to the repair the 5th gear had never before jumped out.... I would be very grateful for any replies.

Thanks for posting here on this issue, just got the same problem myself. Can I ask which garage you used please Jim Stewart, as I am having problems getting this resolved. Thanks in advance

The 5th gear on my 1997 ducato was slipping out after only 57000 miles. It seems these are prone to this. I took it to a local workshop and was told it could be a streched cable that would cost me £270 to replace. If this did'nt work it would mean the gearbox had to be took out and repaired. I took the camper to a gearbox specialist who had repaired lots of these. The syncromesh hub, 5th selected gear and 5th driven gear was replaced and the work was carried out with the box in situe. Cost £470 inc VAT.

Hi ,ve come across this a few times on these camper vans.
It always happens to the camper vans rather than the normal vans.
Everytime ive come across it the 5th gear selector fork has been the problem,it normally weras out on one side so it does not engage 5th properly which is why it jumps out.
