Emerson VCR displays "SAFE"?

My Emerson VCR, model EV506N, displays "SAFE" as soon as it is turned on. I tried to unplug it but it still says "SAFE", how do I fix it?

Hold the power button on your remote for about 10 - 15 seconds. This will take it out of SAFE mode.
