I fixed head gasket but now the cooling system seems to be blocked somewhere with black sludge..Got a new rad took out thermostat and hosed engine but still boiling water and not pumping coolant around?

You've probably sorted it by now but my guess is the oil cooler is faulty. I've seen the dw8 1.9 diesel eng do this. Isolate that first before you start ripping the cylinder head off.

could also be faulty engine oil cooler [situated between oil filter and engine block]

Alas, water in the cooling system usually signifies cylinder head gasket problems - especially if you are loosing coolant too. This usually happens if the engine has been allowed to overheat at some time.
