How can I fix the GT371 safety switch fault?

I have a GT371 hdge trimmer, the problem is with the safrty switch, all the parts are there according to the B&D parts list and assembled correctly but when the handles are squeesed it will not move the acctuator enough to make the switch? the machine will run ok if the D shaped switch is operated, this proves the machine is ok. The drawing shows 4 parts for the safety switch is there some hidden parts? Hope you can help as I am baffeld as to how this operates.Thank you.

That tiny peg on the inside of the black plate which actually operates the switch seems to be there to prevent the plate moving if the handles are not in one of the two positions that it locks into. However it does seems possible to get it accidentally clamped between the two halves of the shell.

It's a real test of one's patience.

I had the same problem. email B & D support and they will send you a set of instructions on how to assemble the safety switch. There are locating holes in all three parts of the safety switch. You need a needle passing through all of the holes to keep the switch assembly together. Assemble the switch in the lower clam shell with the bottom of the needle passing through the hole in the lower clam shell. Locate all the cables etc and refit the upper clam shell. Don't over tighten the screws. Then remove the needle from the lower clam shell. The switch should be setup in the correct position. Good luck.

Hi,
it's a common fault with this model. I got mine repaired by Baron Bros Ltd 0113 270 7454 who are Black&Deckers' official repair place. You could give them a call and ask what you need to do!

I also have that problem. There is a tiny peg on one side also that prevents the whole thing from moving which seems confusing.
