My dyson vacuum cleaner brush will not spin. It is not the belt. help?

I was vacuuming an area rug whenn a string from the rug's border got caught in the vacuum. I stopped the clearner and pulled it out. when I re-started, the brush wouldn't spin. I checked the belt and it is not off or broken. This is a Dyson DC 14 animal.
Jody, May 2008
I have a DC 50. None of the suggestions worked for me. Sigh.

Needanewvacuum, April 2022
When I replaced the brush bar I pushed it in until I felt a click. Problem solved and the brush bar spins faster too

After much searching, I was about to give up when I found this post. I had my doubts. For the record it did not work laying on its side. Was about to give up when I put DC51 on a carpeted surface, turned it on and toggled the carpet switch 5X plus and it suddenly started working again!!!!

Debbie, May 2021
OMG! Laying it on its side and toggling the switch actually worked!!! Wish I had found this post sooner but it was still a good thing that I took apart the beater brush assembly and cleaned it out. I had already ordered a replacement switch but it was only $8 with shipping from Amazon. I'll have that in case it trips out again. (This is like the "secret menu" at In & Out or a cheat code for a video game).

Thank you so much for the tip!

Kelly W, December 2020
I have a Dyson DC28 Animal and the brush/roller would not spin. I tried the 5X trick/hack and it worked!! Amazing. Thank you for this ingenious fix.

Bill, November 2020
Unbelievable!! I tried several sites and finally found this one. My brush would start to spin on my Dyson dc28 animal vac but the red light would start flashing immediately after starting. I saw this post and thought, "what the furballs, nothing else is working."

With the machine in the upright position, I turned the machine on its side, bare floor button on the "up" side and deep pile on the "bottom" side. Left it in the upright position and still while on its side, I turned it on, toggled between deep pile and bare floor buttons 5X, ending on the deep pile button. It's worth noting that after the deep pile button was pushed, the brush seemed to go into a 15 second or so adjustment that I waited on each time before hitting the bare floor button. I then turned the unit off and while still having it on its side, I kicked it from upright to what would be the reclined operating position if it was standing, turned it on and could not believe this worked!

theres, August 2020
Worked on a Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal & Allergy. It took some jiggling around which side up, how many clicks, but suddenly, the beat bar started spinning. Yeah...

Copacetic, April 2020
the 5x on and off trick really works. i was all ready to strip the machine down and in desperation scoured the internet and came across this tip on here. thank you

d jones, December 2019
Clicking the silver button five times absoutely worked for me. As described below lay it on its side, extended and click five times. This was after I cleaned the brush of course but it saved me from getting a new vacuum cleaner.

Skittles, November 2019
The 5X truck really works !! I promise. Turned the vacuum on the side. Took the handle out of the upright position. Clicked the brush button more like 7 times for good measure (while the unit is off). Then put the handle back in the upright position and turned the power on and PRESTO !!

Will G, July 2019
My wife looked at me like I was nuts when I told her about the 5x switch and put it on its side, but it worked.

D Naz, December 2018
My Dyson Big Ball had the switch not making contact. Power ohm out fine, brush did not. Repaired switch on the desk by cleaning contacts. Works great now.

choreguy, December 2018
My DC27 beater bar stopped rotating. I knew there was a trick but I couldn't remember. I found it here! Yes, the 5x trick works every time! Vacuum has to be unplugged, extended (not in upright position), on it's side or beater bar facing up. Thanks everyone!

Pam, November 2018
Amazing! Thank you so much!!

Ma Baker, March 2018
My vacuum was having the same problem - beater bar wouldn't turn, TERRIBLE noise, and the clutch was TOTALLY fine (although i did replace it myself bc the vac people said that's what was wrong at first). I cleaned the beater bar, the 5x trick STILL didn't work, then I realized that you can take the two almost-oval shaped covers off the each end of the beater bar. After cleaning the INSANE amounts of hair out of there, the 5x trick WORKED!!!! Good luck to all!

GA Mama, March 2018
Laying it with the power button side down was the key and toggle it until it starts, a lot more than 5 times.

Ron, March 2018
It worked!!! Make sure that the vacuum brush head is tilted in the on position. Have the vacuum running and switch the rug/floor knob back and forth...
I am so glad that I found this link...Thank you!

Debby, November 2017
I couldn't believe that this 'Magic Trick' could work but it did. Who would think that something so simple as lying it down on it's side and using the 5x back and forth with the carpet/floor knob would work. Thank you to the person who put the solution on the forum, you have saved me a lot of money, looking on the forum was a last ditch attempt before I took it in for repair

Jenny, September 2017
I've spent hours trying to fix the damn thing and flipping he floor mode from bare to carpet five times while on and upside down worked when nothing else did! Thanks!

Jessica, September 2017
o my god...it works.. 5 times power then brush on off...lay it on it's side...with foot petal on...turn it on...amazing...

Laura, May 2017
I don't understand what everyone is on about can someone post a pic on how to do this trick please

James, May 2017
Took apart my Dyson DC33 to clean brush bar and the 2 filters. Waited the 24 hours for the filters to dry and put everything back together. Brush bar did not turn. The belt driving the brush bar was not moving. Found this online advice and thought it ridiculous, however, IT WORKED. The only thing I would add is, when you turn on the machine, after doing the 5X movement, WAIT with the machine running, Presto! It started!! Awesome and thanks to everyone!

Ohio, April 2017
this trick worked! i have a Dyson DC 51. I layed it on the left side with the power button down, vacuum extended, however, I did have to toggle more than 5 times and I did have the vacuum running when it finally start spinning.

Lori, April 2017
Can't believe ii, worked for me as well, thanks a lot

Haygringo, March 2017
DC33 - 5x trick worked for me, thanks very much!

David, January 2017
I tried the 5X combination to reset the Dyson dc50 and it wouldn't work. I did it over and over again. It wouldn't work. Out of frustration I had the vacuum plugged in, in the standing position and pressed the brush reset button many times, I lost count, and it started working! So 5X is not necessarily the combination.

lsammons, December 2016
The 5x method worked! I followed the instructions in this forum thread, including cleaning the rotator brush. Just to confirm, the vacuum cleaner should be in its unlocked, non-standing position before laying on its side, and then toggle the rotator button 5x. I don't know if this makes a difference, but the vacuum cleaner was plugged in while toggling the button.

Kathy, December 2016
This isn't working for me. I turn off the machine. Lie it on its side so that the baeater brush is at a right`angle to the floor. The beater assembly head is not in the engaged vacuuming position. It is in the upright position, as it is when I have it in the closet. There is no blockage. I see the brush bar moving up and down as I alternate between the carpet setting and bare floor setting. But it doesn't turn. Should it be turning when I am doing this? When I have completed the 5-time test, I stand it up, turn it on, and attempt to vacuum but again, the bar doesn't turn, the red light flashes, and the carpet height adjuster will not change from medium setting. TIA for any help!

Suzanne, November 2016
. . . not body probably realizes that this 5X works so I need to let everyone know THIS MAGIC TRICK REAALLY WORKS1111

donnie, November 2016
Did as others have stated in reference to switching the carpet/bare floor dial back and forth 5 times. I have a DC14 and it took 2 tries but it is now working fine. Unbelievable - I was prepared to send to the shop to get fixed. Saved me some money.
Thanks

Larry, October 2016
Boy do I feel guilty. I bought a dyson dc 33 from shpock. Only paid the lady £12 for it. The machine looked immaculate, and she explained that she had cleaned the filters, checked for blockages etc. She,d followed everything on youtube, but to no avail. I bought it home, did the youtube thing and then found this forum. Did the 5x trick and God it freakin worked. cant believe my luck coming across this trick. Feel sorry for the poor girl that sold it me, but I'm afraid needs must lol. give it a try folks

Brian, July 2016
After having my vacuum for 4 years...The brush on my Dyson canister would barely spin....I was not going to spend $150 like on my upright.
There is no belt to this brush.
Took out the 5 screws (that you need a 6-pointed head to remove) that hold on the clear cover over the brush. Each side of the brush bar will remove with a slight twist.
You would not believe the hair and dirt inside the 2 halves! Cleaned them out, put assembly together.....started it and it works great!
There isn't anything difficult with this as long as you have the star head attachment for your ratchet......hope this helps.

Kelly p, April 2016
my Dyson 27 brush not spinning and it does not suck from the base unit

delta, February 2016
Took some fiddling but got it to work on my DC41. Toggle the brush power button next to the power button. Do it 5x and tip it on its side.

Titus, January 2016
I can confirm this worked for me as well. I have a Dyson DC28, I cleaned out the brush bar per instructions from Dyson (removing hair and other stuff that might clog the roller), still had red blinking light. I put the machine on it's side and then toggled between bare floor and short pile mode waiting just long enough for the roller to kick on and then off and the blinking light stopped after doing this 4-5 times. It's like this process causes it to 'reset' somehow.

Patrick, January 2016
Recline vacuum handle, lay your Dyson on it's side so that the bare floor button is facing up (ippsite side from the floor) and toggle bare /carpet button! MAGIC! Works perfect! This is by far the most useful and accurate piece of DIY repair information I've ever found on the Internet! Worked perfect for me the very first 1st try and ultimately saved me time and money! Thanks everyone!!!

Chris from Sacramento, December 2015
Switching the brush control 5X, finishing on carpet setting, also worked for me (actually, I did 6X as I started on carpet!). I thought it might also be helpful to point out that when the brush roll wasn't turning, the vacuum was making a really horrible noise. I thought something worse might be wrong, but all is well now! :)

Raedwulf, September 2015
5 x worked like a charm my Dyson DC 28 beater bar did not work now running great. Dyson should have this on their trouble shooting manual. I had my Dyson 5 years 4 months so warranty was out thank u for saving me a huge bill for repair and probably do exactly what i did through your site. But charge me and not tell me the truth.

Brent, July 2015
Yup. the 5x trick really did work. Just remember to do as it says, lay the handle back. Just when I thought my 7yr Dyson was done...life restored!

girlygirl, July 2015
That's crazy... 5 x switch stuff worked for me too with a DC33. I had visions of taking the machine apart and this was a joke supported by loads of cruel pranksters, but no - it works! Thank you!

Wiggy, April 2015
THIS WORKED! CRAZY... try this: switch the carpet/bare floor dial back & forth 5 times, ending on carpet. Tilt the handle back as if to vacuum upright & lay the vacuum on its side so it is resting on the side opposite the carpet/bare floor dial. Turn the vacuum on.

Mike, March 2015
Just tried the clicking 5 times from hard floor to carpet trick posted by Mommy from Feb 2010. Worked a treat. Big big thanks.

Laura, March 2015
HOLY SWEET MOTHER OF VACUUM GODS!!! THAT WORKED!!

I was on my iPhone and didn't realize that the post by "mommy" at the bottom of the thread explained how to do the 5x trick. For those of you that experience the same thing using a smart phone; scroll down to the second post from the bottom.

Turn your Dyson on its side. ( you want the bare floor button to be facing up, not twords the floor.) Extend the unit like you are going vacuum. Then follow moms trick :

How to fix the Dyson drum not spinning, stopping and the button flashing an error:

switch the carpet ( any of the other 3 buttons on the28D) /bare floor dial back & forth 5 times, ending on carpet. Tilt the handle back as if to vacuum upright & lay the vacuum on its side so it is resting on the side opposite the carpet/bare floor dial. Turn the vacuum on.

Thanks A TON!!! MY WIFE THANKS YOU FOR THE POST!!

Dysonresetfix, March 2015
Hello.. We have a Dyson DC33 and the roller brush wasn't moving.. we took it apart and cleaned the brush and checked everything and still no luck**

Then after reading these articles we tried the 5X
trick and it WORKS !!!!!!! We would of never believed it,
but it was the most simplest idea that did the trick***

It saved us a TON of $$$$$ to get a new one** ;0)

Dee, February 2015
This just saved me £47 😁

louise, November 2014
I was so sure this was not going to work ... BUT IT DID!!! I had to keep trying for a few minutes and then presto! Thank you!! The Dyson folks did NOT have this in their YouTube video (although my beater bar is now nice and clean.) Was about to chuck my DC-18 to the curb. Seriously, I was an Amazon one click away and then I found this!

MissEmZee, November 2014
Just tried the 5 times fix and it works. Over the moon as thought was going to be a £75.00 engineer callout. The dyson DC14 lives on.

Andy, October 2014
OMG!!!!!!! This is unbelievable!!! Jesus is Lord!! I am doing the Hula dance:) I have tried everything under sun to get my dyson to spin but no luck I was dreading the bill I will incur if I took it in to the repair shop or buy a new one........then I found this forum.... God bless you and 5X carpet/floor reset!!!

Fay, September 2014
OMG this totally works!! After my belt stopped spinning on my DC 14, I spent over an hour fooling around with the vacuum trying to get it going. Found this little gem and it worked the first time I tried it...5 clicks, put the handle back, tilted it on its side and turned it on....brush was spinning beautifully!! I see the original post is several years old, but this trick still works great!! THANK YOU!!

Bejemi, September 2014
My dyson dc 27 was locked in the upright position did this trick of putting it on its side moved the changer from hard floor to carets 5 times and low and behold it works well done you clever people.

Daniel, August 2014
I can HAPPILY verify that switching that knob back and forth five times, and putting the vacuum on its side to turn back on works!

THANK YOU FOR THIS TIP! I was earlier so frustrated that I couldn't find any reset button info.

Cynthia, August 2014
After tearing my DC 25 all apart, cleaning everything and even buying a new vacuum altogether, I found this site. It helped BIG TIME! I didn't know if it was the brush head or the switch. Its the switch or the brush reset switch (gray button) inside the handle. After carefully taking the handle apart,I poked at it until it ran but eventually it shut off again I will replace the switch. When taking apart the handle be careful, there is a little spring and one or two other small pieces inside that will fall out if your not careful. If you don't know where they go, its a pain getting it back together. Now I will have two Dyson's one for each end of the house! Im glad I didn't toss it out over a $5 part.

Erwin Fletcher, May 2014
Unbelievable!!! I just tried this trick on my DC28 and it worked on the first try. I had clicked on the Dyson's fixya websites first and have to say they are pretty useless. They want you to call them or chat on line every time somebody had a question. I'll be honest, I thought this trick was a little weird, but try turning off your seatbelt chime permanently in your car. My vehicle has me pushing buttons and starting the car within a certain time limit. This was just a little secret "reset" that got out. Just want to say thanks to whoever leaked the info. You saved everybody a lot of money.

J, April 2014
Holy Cow!!! This did work!!! Cannot believe it 🙏😊

Gabel505, February 2014
This worked on my DC33 after I noticed that the brush had stopped working. My husband took it apart and cleaned the brush off, but it still wouldn't spin. Found this forum, had him put it all back together and try it after following the reset switch steps, and it worked! Phew!

February 2014

Jessica, February 2014
Worked for me too, on a DC33. Important thing is to have the handle tilted back as though vacuuming - if it's upright, I guess it disconnects the brushbar to stop it wearing the carpet out. Thanks Mommy!

Tony Leigh, Bristol, England, January 2014
Yup, don't know how, but this actually worked !

MP, January 2014
yes it does work .....! I love my dc 14.

DC lover, December 2013
Amazing flipped the carpet/floor switch backwards and forwards half a dozen times left it on carpet, turned it on to it's side with the carpet switch upwards switched on and hey presto it's working.

paul, December 2013
I'm ecstatic! just when I was expecting to have to shell out for a new Vacuum cleaner before Xmas, stumbled on this gem of a fix, must admit didn't expect it to work, had to do it 3 times but it worked on the 3rd attempt, yahoo!

Diane, December 2013
Amazing! It really worked! Been puzzled for over a week as to what was wrong with my dc33

Nicky, December 2013
On it's side turned the gear 5x up and down, finishing on carpet a switched it on on its side, then turned up, tilted and used. Working perfectly thank goodness, were sanding floor :/

Em, December 2013
Holy buckets!!!!!!! It worked

terri, November 2013

Oh my gosh this WORKED! Too funny.

Michelle, October 2013
After spending many hours stripping/cleaning and attempting repair found this and although I thought it was nonsense gave it a whirl. Know what, it worked, many thanks.

Iain Johnstone. Erskine Scotland, October 2013
Oh sure, we thought. And then you do the hokey-pokey and you turn yourself around…send up a prayer to the Vaccum Cleaner God….
What can I say? It worked! How did anyone ever figure this solution out. Did they try every possible variation of carpet/floor/upright/on its side and finally this worked.
Thank you, fellow vacuum cleaner owners.

Scarsdale, September 2013
I have one question, I have a DC33 Multi-Floor, and one day, I forgot to change the carpet blade to not work on my wood floor, what would go wrong?

Mark Z., August 2013
This happened to me today and the switching 5 times worked like a charm! Thanks!

YES YES IT DOES WORK .....! I LOVE MY DC41 LOVE IT.....

Cindy Martinez, July 2013
Wtf it worked !!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you

Cainey, July 2013
This did NOT work for me. I tried everything everyone suggested :( Vacuum worked perfectly last night (I have a DC 28 Animal - Purple one) and when I went to use it today the thing wouldn't work except for the handle/attachments portion. Suction is perfectly fine - I checked all hoses and such - no blocking. HELP!!!

WickedMaineiac, June 2013
Top notch solution worked a treat, if your wondering what everyone is talking about scroll down and the second post from the bottom flicking it back and forth then putting it on its side. now I can play video games and leave the tool kit out and pretend to have spent an afternoon working on it.

Lazy son, June 2013
It's just worked for me too - Amazing!

Jo, June 2013
Cannot believe it had problem with dc33 which had no brush spinning read this and thought you must be joking but it worked. Fantastic

Mike, June 2013
My Dyson 25 had the same problem but none of these solutions worked. My hubby took apart the on/off switch housing to find a red reset button on the INSIDE. It still didn't work until he tilted the handle all the way back after depressing the brush button numerous times. Fixed!

Dina, June 2013
I didn't believe this flipping the switch 5x would work. I tried it. It did not work. Frustrated, I kept reading, then saw the post that stated the handle needs to be tilted all the way back. Sigh. Totally disbelieving it would really matter... I tried it again. Holy buckets!! IT WORKED!!! No way!! I am a believer now!! Thank you!

Jackie, April 2013
For my DC33, the switch clutch 5x ending on carpet, lay on side with handle down method did not work. I loosened the 3 screws and took off the plate exposing the beater brush. Removed hair, etc.. The brush was very hard to spin because the belt was stuck. I placed my thumb firmly on the belt and pushed the belt up towards the front. After about one eighth of an inch, there was a thunk as the clutch became unstuck. The belt and brush then spun easily. I replaced the plate, tightened the 3 screws, and it is working well. Hope this helps someone!

Frank, April 2013
My 2 month old DC33 snagged a thread on a area rug which tripped the clutch fail safe. I was sure it was headed to repair until this forum appreared near the top of a Google search.

Still amazed. Thanks!

Phil, March 2013
Can't believe it, thought dyson was well and truly broken, but followed these steps and it worked. Amazing!

Clueless, February 2013
Awesome! It worked - many thanks. If only all repairs were so easy. Clever Dyson & great post Jody.

Regards

Dave P, February 2013
Are you kidding me!!!?? LOL! I've been messing with this thing for an hour and then googled it. Switching back and forth 5x worked the first time! Awesome. Thank you

Rick, February 2013
I never post on forums but this is so unbelievably true that I had to comment. The switch x5 trick worked perfectly. as goofy as it sounds. I am absolutely dumbfounded. A hearty thank you to whomever discovered this trick and to the entire community here for keeping this gem of a posting alive.

OlympiaSims, January 2013
I was Skeptical, but it worked. Thanks!

Dennis, January 2013
Our DC25 had same problem. Yes, same answer from me! This magic spell (or maybe a slight variation of it) did the job. Excellent!

Timbo, January 2013
I took the vacuum apart and was going to order a new cartpet/floor switch, I read this and put the vacuum back together, turned the vacuum upside down and switched the carpet/floor switch several times, it worked!

Jimbo, January 2013
Damn, this post fixed mine. that is crazy!!! Thanks a bunch

Jay, December 2012
I totally did not believe this would work, but had nothing to lose, so I tried what the poster said,

"I know this is an old post, but I just found a solution on another site. Before you buy any parts, try this: switch the carpet/bare floor dial back & forth 5 times, ending on carpet. Tilt the handle back as if to vacuum upright & lay the vacuum on its side so it is resting on the side opposite the carpet/bare floor dial. Turn the vacuum on."

IT WORKED!!!! Hilarious!

Semalee, December 2012
I have a dc33 and it the 5x switch worked for me. I turned my dyson on while upright switched back and forth the setting 5x then tilted it back on its side and low and behold the brush was spinning. Wow!

4lilbirds, November 2012
For my machine I just held the carpet/floor button down for 10 seconds and it reset the failsafe. Didn't need the 5 times on/off.

EllenJane, September 2012
I found this helpful web by doing a search. I try your suggestion and it work for me. Thank a million.

sn., July 2012
WOW! The 5 switch trick worked. I used it on my Dyson Absolute DC 17. Switch is next to the power button. It didn't work by just doing the switch but did after I put it on it's side like the first poster mentioned.

Thank You Thank You Thank You!!!!!

Skeptical but happy to have been wrong :-), June 2012
I was COMPLETELY skeptical of this answer.... BUT.... It worked for mine!!!.... And now my wife has to call me "Mr. Awesome" for the next 48 hours!

One more testimonial on repairing the Dyson DC14. Move the "BARE FLOOR / CARPET" switch back and forth 5 times. Make sure you end up on the CARPET setting. Lay it on it's side, extend the handle and PRESTO. It works like a charm!

Hi Jody

I have had this problem with my mums dyson she had a DC14 animal and it turned out to be that the clutch must of been already on its way out because when i took the machine apart the white plastic piece inside the clutch was already burnt and worn i simply purchased a new clutch from www.sparesaver.com it arrived in 36 hours and then i followed there step by step instructions on how to replace a clutch it was amazing so easy & simple you will find all your answers to your dyson problems with this website.
