Renault laguna sunroof leaking/drainage pipe leaking?

I have a 2002 Renault Laguna II sport-tourer 1.8 Dynamique.
It has a the panoramic glass sunroof. It has been leaking on the passenger side and coming down collecting directly under where the roof support joins the main body, so following the drainage pipe (As i can touch it) then dripping down behind and in front of the plastic trim that is like a door sill collecting in the floorpan. It leaks When parked facing down my drive, but doesn't seem to when facing upwards. Presumably because there are more drainage pipes at the back which aren't blocked or split. I recently "rodded" down through the pipe with a flexible but somewhat stiff green garden line metal wire in the centre. This came back up dirty gradually getting further down and cleaner the more time is went through. However it still seems to be leaking and I would guess that the rubber has perished and split, OR i managed to break through with the line.

What I'm wondering is has anyone else had a problem with the pipe giving up? Or do they know if Renault made it with joins etc.

Replies from anyone with similar experience or knowledge on the sunroof design or anything would be much appreciated, particularly on where to get these sort of parts other than Renault.
(I already know about GSF and will be enquiring when I pick up the parts for my electric window)

Yes, it work on my laguna 2006 sports-tourer. Recent heavy rain, i found my driverside footwell full of water, water dripping from sunroof. After reading in this webside, I tried with window net curtain wire and it unblock the sunroof drains and water runs freely into the drain and can see water running on ground by front wheel.

All good advice here for the leaking sun roof. I read this some time ago when I had water sloshing about in the door and in the footwell. Unblocked the drainage pipes and never again do I have water inside. The door was a blocked drain hole in the rubber seal. Also check drainage from scuttle by removing plastic grid around wipers, as this will send water through heater box and on to floor in car.

2002 Laguna....all of the answers here are useful but a couple of tips. You have identified which front sunroof drain is blocked, because the leak is apparent at either off or nearside. Before you start removing wheels and arch covers, try this. Open the sunroof, look into the slight well at the forward corner, the drain hole can be seen, using about two metres of 3mm round plastic coated bell wire or similar that has at least some stiffness, round the tip by lightly sanding so no sharp edge is or metal wire is showing so that you don't damage the drainage tube. Ease the the cable into the drain hole. Push slowly in and out increasing the length of fed cable in until you establish that some water is dripping from the front wheel arch area near the door. To test that the drain is clear, add some milk to water and pour carefully into the drain area, the milky water will flow to the ground proving your success.

My 1999 Laguna started leaking recently, with about 3 cm of water in the passenger footwell last week. I assumed it was the sunroof seal, but having looked on this forum, thought maybe not. Followed the instructions here to (a) clear the sunroof drainage tube from the top, which I did with some electrical flex (doorbell wire?) and (b) removing part of the wheel arch trim to reach the bottom end of the drain - I pushed the flex up from here, and as warned a flood of water came out. Seems to have solved the problem, thanks for the top tips!

The best way to stop your sunroof leaking into the footwell is to take your car to your local garage , then ask them to blow through the drainage pipes (particulary the front ones ) with an airline. You wont believe the amount of muck and water that comes out! Did mine and no more leaks :)

well my mk2 leaks inside through the vanity mirror light and straight on to the passenger seat went into the garage for the 4th time yesterday lets see what happens when it next rains

My 04 plate Laguna Initial Tourer also has this problem, I have traced it to a blocked drain pipe but not repaired it yet.
For those that think the sealing rubber has given up, may I suggest not.
Apparently, car sunroofs are not designed watertight which is why they are fitted with gutters and drains. I found this out a while ago while researching a similar problem with a Land Rover I had.
Just a though folks.

Fixed mine. Thanks to Tim for his guide here. Was going to find something long enough to put down drain tube, or even blast with air, but thought if can get to the end of the problem all the better. Mine is a 2001 new shape Laguna Dynamique hatchback. First side took about an hour as half took off the wing, as did not want to crack the plastic but then realised only need to take off 4 bolts, second side took about half that including taking off the wheel.
Here is what I did. Undid the two bolts holding the plastic wing under the car near the front jacking point. Open the front door, near the bottom lifted the dome cover off the bottom bolt holding on the wing and undid this one. The bolt half way up loosened that off just to give a bit more space. Next jacked up car and took off wheel. There is a small T type (the one that looks like a star) screw near the bottom of the wing. Undid this. The bottom part of the wing should pull away a bit, as only need to get a hand in. Mine had foam inserts that I removed along with a few cups of dirt. Removed cap from drain pipe. Washed cap, foam and inside the wing. Put it all back together. Rained that night and inside the car stayed dry.
A straight forward job to do, and clears the problem hopefully for another 8 years. You need 10mm socket and open end spanner and think it was a T10 screwdriver, you also need stands or something to block up the car when the wheel is off.

My Renault Laguna 2003 had the same problem - garage didnt want to know!
We sorted it by rigorous use of the net curtain plastic coated wire (garden wire was not man-enough to gbet round the corners) and pouring hot detergent mix down the hole. the drainage tube is longer than you think. By pouring the detergent mix down the hole you can see when it is freed up properly.
No trouble since

i had same problem with my 94 laguna,
the drain off hoses lead from each front corners of sunroof, down inside front door pillers, leading down
to underneat the wings inside front wheel arches,
that is where the problem starts, the outflow/drainoff
hoses get blocked by mud twiges leaves etc...
as yr lookin at drivers front wheel, unscrew the wheel arch from bottom left workin upwards and
appox 6" to 9" up from ground level you will see a plastic type cap this is the cover for the drain off hose
lift this off but be carefull as when you do this the lodged water will flow out like a river just to make sure the hose is totally clear use a stick/wirehanger to help free any leaves/mud etc lodged in hose, repeat the same on passenger side arch.... hopefully this will solve your problem...

02 plate aswel with the same problem! anyone fixed it yet?

Tom, November 2008
my 3 litre dynamique estate sunroof trim leaks -the rubber has become brittle. It rollls down the windscreen bar and cllects in the floorpan- after tracking through the relys and switching off the odometer and everything lse for a time. A poor design and renault are aware and chage the earth for a repair. If anyone has a 51 plate trim I would be happy to buy it! mcapm61@hotmai.com

Hi Darryl....got exactly the same problem on the same model.I have not tried any remedies yet.Any more suggestions ?

Vaughan, July 2008
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY 1.8 BUT I THINK ITS DEFINATELY WHERE THE WATER CHANNELS ON TOP ON THE CAR DOWN THE GROOVES THAT RUN ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE CAR, IT SEEMS AS THE SEAL HAS PERISHED AND IT RUNS STRAIGHT INTO MY CAR!!! I WOULD ALSO KNOW THE BEST WAY TO FIX IT.
