Insulating soil pipe?

Methods to insulate bathroom soil pipe
John, June 2008
Thanks Scuba, Iain and Hispec for responding.

The soil pipe is two stories high. I'm in the process of remodeling the first floor bathroom and have enclosed that ceiling with drywall (originally a drop ceiling) and my upstairs bathroom floor then became extremely cold. The soil pipe is still exposed in the first floor bathroom wall and it does sweat and is extremly cold to the touch. The space between the new 1st floor bathroom ceiling and the top bathroom floor is now open to the soil pipe in the wall. While able to insulate that wall space containing the soil pipe during 1st floor bathroom remodeling, what type of insulation should I use : Foam board, spray foam, fiber glass etc. My concerns are that by insulating the soil pipe in the wall am I now creating new problems by doing so.

Side Note, I never realized just how much cold air is allowed inside house walls by soil vent piping and is there a way to reduce or control the downward winter draft in the soil pipe?

Thanks again in advance.

why do you want to insulate your soil pipe, sound or condensation ?, can you see the siol pipe in your loft, is there some boxing around it or is it exposed ?

have you tried a duffle coat, they have pretty good insulating properties.
