you could also try deleteing your cookies & temp internet files then run a scan disc followed by a defrag you will notice your pc will have speeded up afterwards

take on board your comments but how would this only just start to happen same drives nothing has changed except for the slow access time. it would appear that this is an issue as ms have attempted to solve this problem, other people have reported even slowe access time than myself up to 5 mins and the searching tourch come s up , somthing i have noticed not sure if it is any thing but in the run section it seems not to remember command line that have been previously entered and the same goes for the web address bar there again does not rember past site the history is set for 20 days i will have to keep looking any more help would be welcome

If you've got a CD/DVD in your optical drive the OS needs to spin it up to read it.

8x, 24x, 48x or 52x takes about 5-7 seconds to reach speed and catalog in 'My Computer'

Any help?

Have you tried cleaning the Registry?

Get a utility like Registry Medic to scan your PC and remove entries in the Registry which are no longer required.

This shouldn't hurt, and even if it doesn't fix this problem you'll find your PC works faster.
