My machine, 4 years old, was making a clicking noise when the drum was turning, culminating with a hot, burning smell when spinning! The engineer diagnosed commutator on the motor had started to break up and the only remedy was a new motor. Estimated cost, £250 fitted!
Not sure if this is the same problem as yours. Hope not!
