berlingo 1.9 DW8 engine smokes and eats its own oil on corners?

hi there , i went to pick a v reg berlingo up today and when ticking over its a bit lumpy and smoky , then when i drove it home it seamed to clear up the smoke , 80 mph on motorway ok , no smoke , but on going round a roundabout it somehow reved high and a white smokescreen bellowed out the back as if it was a turbo and the tubo had packed in by sending iol onto the inlet and running on it , now it only did it for about 5 seconds then after it cleared up ,, i got it home and checked the oil cap by taking it off and reving the engine to see if it sucked the cap down , did it , did it hell , it blew back as if the engine was breathing ,, its only done 52 thousand miles and i think the oil came from the rocker box and threw the breather directly into the inlet and burned that way ,, any ideas on when could be causing it ,,, by the way it ran down the motorway fine only couthing a bit of black smoke out when changing gear , bit of over fueling i think , nothing to worry about , but the white smoke and oil pressure is a worry , all help greatly accepted ,, maybe breathers blocked ? .. kindest regards Daz

u have a malfunctioning inlet valve.smokes when turning left, its cyl 4.smokes when turningright its cyl 1..whats happening is when turning the oil in the head thats meant to drain down is sloshing to the top of the valve and because the valve is faulty it is sucked down valve guide into cyl and engine goes warp speed .remove cam cover to gain acces to cam .and check tappet clearances.if i remember tis engine is bucket and shim.if ur lucky it is a tight tappet holding valve permanantly open,if not lucky then valve is either bent or burnt.head off.summary.engine sloshing causes racing(corners)valve not sealing sucks oil, creates a route for gasses to enter crancases when tickover pressurising same (oil blow out)0when driving gerar change creates temporary vacum drawing oil and makeing puff of black smoke.lack of compression causes rough tickover..test by cracking injector hard lines when ticking over 1 cyl will barely affect engine note or idle speed (duff 1)the rest will audibly affect idle speed /smoothness

The DW8 isn't an engine thats noted for excessive oil consumption...assuming that it has been looked after, of course! Check the oil level when the car is cold - it mustn't be above maximum. Its a good idea to check the breathers as you say - with the oil filler cap off you should expect a bit of vapour to chuff out but there shouldn't be any oil droplets at all. Maybe you could get a compression test done? This could indicate piston/cylinder issues if the pressures are low.
