How do I repair a Kenwood car stereo/cd player?

I am trying to fix my Kenwood cd/ car stereo. It is one that when you turn on the car the cd player then opens to play the music and then when you shut the car off the stereo turns so it goes to a black screen (as a anti theft device)
Well when I went to go turn on the car it opened and then stopped halfway through I have pressed every button I know to press and it won't work. I cannot listen to it at all. Please let me know if you have any ideas. Thank you

I know this is an old question but my KDC-PS9060R just failed because of a broken ribbon cable. Open up the case (one screw, lift off the panel), remove the CD player (3 screws, be careful of the attached ribbon cable), release the ribbon cable latches (use a small flat screwdriver to slide the plastic lug/pins towards the cable), remove the mask faceplate (two small screws one at each end). The front of my faceplate has a plastic panel that is glued on and covers the screws and hidden micro-switch. Lift off the plastic cover carefully to avoid damage, undo the 4 screws. Release the ribbon cable in the faceplate from the circuit board. Mine was labelled with the part number J84-0061-33 - found a new one on ebay for £7. Good luck!

I added a switch to provide constant power (red power wire) to the unit when I park it in my garage. I just turn the unit off without holding the source button and the unit powers everything down but the display, which draws very little. This will prevent the face from moving or flipping as much and the unit lasts much longer. I have only had to replace the ribbon once. When I park in an area where I need more security, I turn the switch (I added) off and remove the face or let it hide as normal.

I have had the same prob twice.First I payed a repair shop $100. Then I fixed it myself for $30.Get online at www.partsstore.com order the ribbon and recepticle order over phone web site takes forever. Trace ribbon back start pullin screws untill u get it. I love my Kenwood and will fix it untill parts can't be found, but it is a design flaw that Kenwood should fix.Repair only last up to two years or so.

This is an extremely common problem on Kenwood head units featuring the "Mask" feature. There is a small ribbon cable / flex PCB that attaches the faceplate to the main circuit board. After rotating several times eventually one or more connections in this ribbon breaks.

I no longer remember the URL, but do a google search under the Kenwood deck KDC-X717. Someone has posted a step-by-step tutorial on how to reapir this. It is a fairly simple task, with no soldering required. Just some tools, dexterity and a little patience will get you through it no problem yourself.

The new part is fairly inexpensive at around $10-15, and once repaired the units should give you another several years before failure. Check Kenwoods homepage for contact info on where to obtain parts through www.kenwoodusa.com

Hope this helps.
