how can i tell what files arn't needed on my pc?

i would like to know if there is a way of telling what files arn't needed on my pc so i can delete them and free up space on my pc.

Files that end in the suffix .tmp are not needed and the pc sometimes forgets to delete them, also you might wanna delete the help files if you can live without them. and of course your cookies and temporary internet files
