have fitted a jvc cd player into my fiat brava, itworks but when i switch the engine off all memory goes and i have to reset it every time i use the car

There are usually two battery feed to the radio. One is via the ignition which powers the radio when switched on, the other is a permanent feed to the memory . It looks like this permant feed to the memory is missing. Check your wiring + wiring instructions again
