hello,
we are trying to put up an antique chandelier in our new build home, but it only has 2 wires coming from it, and they are both brown, any ideas what to connect what to? as it is brass, should there be an earth?

YES IT NEEDS TO BE EARTHED!

It probably needs completely rewiring. Have it checked by an electrician if you value your dwelling because should it burn down due to you knowingly installing an old fitting without having it checked for electrical safety, your insurance company may decide that you are on your own.
