how can i get my epson r300 to recognise ink cartridge?

i have just put a new yellow ink cartridge in my epson stylus photo r300 but it won't recognise the cartridge so won't let me print anything

Is the cartridge a Epson or compatable, if as I suspect a compatable you need to zap the chip on the cartridge, you can purchase a small device to do this.
